About

This sixth installment in the Human Rights and AI Analytical Report Series delves into the intersection of gender equality and AI governance. It highlights how few national AI strategies explicitly address gender issues, and where they do, the attention often lacks depth or actionable policy measures. The brief uses GIRAI data to reveal gaps in gender-disaggregated data policies, protection from algorithmic bias, and representation of women in AI leadership and development roles.

The analysis raises critical questions about how AI systems may reinforce or exacerbate existing gender inequalities and how governance frameworks can better incorporate gender-sensitive approaches. It also identifies promising practices from select countries and offers recommendations for policymakers, researchers, and civil society actors working to promote inclusive, equitable AI ecosystems.

This brief contributes to the broader GIRAI objective of embedding human rights, especially those of marginalized groups, into the core of global AI governance efforts.
