Established in 2022, the African Observatory on Responsible Artificial Intelligence has recognised the need to promote African voices, experiences and value systems in global debate around responsible AI.

The African Observatory on Responsible AI is a pan-African knowledge hub housed within the Global Center on AI Governance. The African Observatory provides an open platform for engagement, collaboration and critical inquiry on artificial intelligence across Africa’s diverse societies.
The African Observatory champions African perspectives on AI ethics and governance, working to amplify African AI research and expertise on the global stage. Its core focus areas include policy engagement and science communication, research & knowledge production, network convening, and capacity building.
As of 2024, the African Observatory on Responsible AI is led by GCG’s Executive Director, Dr Fola Adeleke.
