Artificial intelligence can help build more inclusive economies and strengthen governance systems aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, but this requires a focus on local relevance, equitable access to data and tools, and ethical policy frameworks in the Global South.

To support this, the FAIR Forward – Artificial Intelligence for All project, implemented by GIZ and led by the Human Sciences Research Council, launched a peer-learning programme in 2021 for policymakers from Africa and Asia. Participants from Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Telangana (India) contributed insights from their own digital and AI policy experiences, shaping a practical and meaningful curriculum. This handbook captures the lessons from that programme and offers guidance on running similar initiatives.
