AI, Disinformation and Bias in Countering Violent Extremism
This piece, contributed by Dr. Samuel Segun to the fourth edition of the EU Knowledge Hub on Prevention of Radicalisation digital magazine, examines the evolving role of AI in preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE). It highlights both the transformative potential of AI tools such as monitoring online spaces, detecting disinformation, and supporting interventions and the risks posed by their exploitation by extremist groups. The article introduces the “bias paradox,” where AI systems designed to mitigate harm may disproportionately impact marginalized communities while missing nuanced extremist content. Emphasizing the need for human oversight, it advocates for a “human-in-the-loop” approach supported by strong regulatory frameworks and human rights safeguards. Overall, it calls for context-aware, responsible AI deployment that balances security objectives with the protection of fundamental rights.
