The AI in the Majority World section of the Oxford AI in Society special collection offers a dedicated platform for critical, interdisciplinary research on artificial intelligence from underrepresented regions, particularly Africa and the Global South. It aims to shift dominant narratives in AI by amplifying diverse perspectives on ethics, governance, power, and development.

The first set of 16 peer-reviewed articles was published in December 2024, featuring work that reflects lived realities and policy debates in Majority World contexts. These contributions explore how AI systems interact with local values, histories, and social structures.

Following strong interest in the initiative, a second call for papers was launched in January 2025. The upcoming collection, due later in 2025, continues this effort to expand the global AI research agenda.

This section is guest edited by Rachel Adams, Fola Adeleke, and Leah Junck, whose editorial leadership supports the visibility and recognition of scholars often left out of mainstream AI discourse.
