The African Observatory on Responsible AI partnered with Data & Policy, a leading open access journal published by Cambridge University Press to advance research on AI, ethics, and governance in African contexts. This collaboration led to the creation of a special track on Artificial Intelligence, Ethics and Policy Governance in Africa at the 2024 Data for Policy conference, held at Imperial College London from July 9–11.

The track featured presentations and discussions focused on African-led policy responses, regulatory innovation, and ethical approaches to AI. It marked a milestone in positioning African perspectives at the center of global debates on data and AI governance.

As part of the collaboration, nine research papers were selected and published in a special collection in Data & Policy in December 2024. These peer-reviewed articles offer critical insight into how responsible AI can be shaped by and for African societies.

This partnership strengthens efforts to build a more inclusive global research ecosystem and ensures African contributions are visible, cited, and integrated into broader policy conversations.
