AI in Africa: A Landscape Study
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming economies and societies across Africa, but realizing its full potential requires context-aware policies, inclusive innovation, and responsible governance. This study, developed by GCG in partnership with Meta, offers one of the most comprehensive overviews of Africa’s AI ecosystem to date, examining trends, challenges, and opportunities for ethical and equitable AI deployment.
Through detailed analysis of governance frameworks, stakeholder roles, and the rise of open-source technologies, the report provides a roadmap for harnessing AI to meet the continent’s development goals, while protecting human rights and reducing inequality.
Project Highlights
Africa's AI Landscape, Mapped
The report presents one of the most detailed analyses to date of Africa’s AI landscape, covering policy readiness, local innovation, and development use cases across sectors like health, education, agriculture, and public services.
Strategic Policy Briefs
As part of the project, we produced three in-depth policy briefs to inform decision making on:
- AI and Sustainable Development.
- Open-Source Large Language Models in Africa.
- Strengthening Africa's AI Ecosystem Through Innovation and Policy Alignment.
Following the launch of the policy briefs, we hosted a series of interactive webinars with leading researchers, policy experts, and technologists to unpack the findings and foster dialogue. Recordings are available for those who couldn't attend live.
