AI and Human Rights in Africa Certificate Courses
The Global Center on AI Governance (GCG), with support from Meta and in partnership with the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, has developed a short course focused on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights in Africa. Designed as an intensive learning experience, the course is structured into 15 sessions that explore the intersection of AI systems and human rights frameworks on the continent.
The curriculum equips participants to play key roles in AI governance:
- Supporting duty-bearers in understanding their obligations
- Guiding governments in meeting human rights commitments in the digital era
- Empowering human rights defenders to monitor and advocate for digital rights
- Enabling rights-holders to claim protections and access redress mechanisms
The first edition of the course was delivered in October 2024. The second edition is scheduled for October 2025.
This course contributes to building a regional knowledge base on ethical AI development, strengthening accountability and rights-based governance in African digital ecosystems.
