The African Hub on AI Safety, Peace and Security is the first initiative of its kind on the continent focused on addressing the real-world risks, harms, and opportunities of artificial intelligence through an African lens.

Established under the AI for Development (AI4D) programme funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) the Hub is led by the Global Center on AI Governance (GCG) in partnership with the University of Cape Town (UCT).

The Hub will advance research on AI safety and governance, build local capacity through interdisciplinary training and mentorship, and influence policy to ensure African priorities are represented in global AI safety frameworks.

By connecting researchers, policymakers, and innovators, the Hub aims to make AI development in Africa safe, inclusive, and aligned with the continent’s values strengthening Africa’s role as a key player in shaping the global AI future
