Introduction

Kevin Ziyada Aseru is a multidisciplinary technologist and researcher passionate about building ethical, inclusive, and socially impactful AI systems. She is the Co-founder and Technical Lead of Research Code Resolve (RCR), an emerging pan-African innovation hub that merges social research and technology to address community challenges through ethical and evidence-based solutions.

Kevin's project, "A Two-Way Pipeline for Detecting GBV Text," is designed to scan thousands of incoming messages, automatically flagging urgent distress signals so support organizations can quickly intervene and save lives.

The project was inspired by a real challenge faced by many organizations that receive large volumes of messages from people experiencing gender-based violence. It often takes a lot of time and effort to go through each message to identify who needs urgent help. The project aims to solve this problem by building a model that can automatically detect distress signals in text helping organizations quickly identify and respond to people in immediate danger.
