About

WFP’s MEza is an AI-powered tool that digitizes handwritten nutrition and health records in remote clinics. Using smartphone photos and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), MEza extracts, organizes, and transmits data instantly, enabling health workers and decision-makers to access real-time information for improved management of nutrition and health interventions in low-resource settings.

Impact

MEza has digitised thousands of health records across over 100 clinics. It has significantly reduced manual data entry time, improved data accuracy, and enabled faster, data-driven responses to malnutrition. Health workers now spend more time with patients, and nutrition interventions reach vulnerable populations more efficiently.

Responsible AI practices

MEza upholds responsible AI by prioritizing data privacy and security, ensuring sensitive health information is protected. The tool is designed for transparency—making data extraction and processing understandable to users—and inclusivity, working in low-resource environments. Continuous feedback from health workers informs iterative improvements, ensuring AI outputs remain accurate, ethical, and contextually appropriate.
