About

Farmer.Chat is an AI-powered digital assistant that uses LLMs to provide timely, local agricultural information in India, Kenya, and Nigeria. It supports extension workers by filling knowledge gaps, ultimately helping smallholder farmers increase productivity and income.

Impact

Farmer.Chat operates in India, Kenya, and Nigeria, reaching over 4,500 extension agents as of January 2024. By equipping these frontline workers with timely, local agronomic advice via AI, Farmer.Chat helps bridge knowledge gaps, enabling better support for smallholder farmers and promoting productivity, resilience, and equitable agricultural outcomes.

Responsible AI practices

Farmer.Chat upholds responsible AI by prioritising transparency through open-source development, ensuring hyper-privacy with robust data policies and consent, and fostering inclusivity via simple, offline-compatible interfaces and user training. Extension workers remain central, evaluating chatbot outputs before sharing with farmers, while continuous user feedback drives ongoing improvements and quality control.
