Nicolás Grossman is the Project Director of the Global Index on Responsible AI at the Global Center on AI Governance (GCG).
He is a sociologist and journalist with extensive experience leading global research initiatives focused on data for the public good and responsible AI. At GCG, he oversees the overall development and implementation of the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI), including the coordination of research partnerships, the design of the measurement framework, and strategies to ensure the Index informs policy and practice.
Nicolás led the development of GIRAI’s first edition, the most comprehensive global assessment of responsible AI to date, managing a network of over 150 experts across 138 countries. The findings revealed significant implementation gaps: fewer than 40% of countries had a national AI strategy, and most lacked mechanisms to address key areas such as gender equality, labor impacts, cultural and linguistic diversity, and redress for harms. The Index has already shaped policy discussions, informing national strategies and being referenced by multilateral organizations including UNESCO and UNDP. It has also contributed to global debates on responsible AI by providing a grounded, inclusive evidence base.
His work is rooted in a Global South perspective and a commitment to building fair and actionable global measurements. Prior to joining GCG, Nicolás served as Research and Data Lead at the Global Data Barometer and led the Open Data and Data Journalism strategy at Properati, a Latin American real estate platform.
He is completing a Master’s degree in Political Sociology at the National University of Tres de Febrero, where his research explores the challenges of big data and AI in less developed contexts. He also created socios.red, a civic tech platform mapping relationships between companies, NGOs, and public officials in Argentina, which was recognized in 2020 by the Sigma Awards as one of the world’s best data journalism applications.
